HID TREASURE

Matthew 13:44     Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

"...It is not difficult to account for this hidden treasure even in modern times. This country (Israel & surrounding) has always been subject to revolutions, invasions, and calamities of various kinds, and hence a feeling of insecurity hovers over the land like a dismal spectre (written 1860). The government robs (and robs those who find treasures), and so do the nobility and the clergy; Arabs rush in from the desert and plunder; warriors and conquerors from every part of the world seep over the land, carrying everything away that falls into their hands. Then there are, and always have been, internal commotions and wars, such as laid Lebanon in ruins in 1841 and again in 1845. At such times; multitudes bury their gold and jewels and in many cases the owners are killed, and no one knows where the treasure was concealed. ..the same spectacle is witnessed in times of plague or cholera, people hide their money to keep it from those miscreants who take advantage of; the general consternation to break into houses and rob.  We need not be surprised, therefore, to find that this country abounds, and ever has abounded in hid treasure.  No custom can be found among any people so firmly rooted as this; of searching for hid treasure, without some real foundation for it........I have heard of diggers actually fainting when they have come upon even a single coin. They become positively frantic, dig all night with desperate earnestness, and continue to work until utterly exhausted. There are at this hour (1860), hundreds of persons thus engaged all over the country. Not a few spend their last farthing in these ruinous efforts. I even heard a respectable man in Sidon declare that if he had been one of a group of rare, yet successful diggers that he had heard of, that he would have killed all the rest, and fled with the treasure...these operations are carried on with the utmost secrecy, charms, incantations"....and finding a treasure can be quite dangerous as exciting. (The Land and The Book  W.M. Thomson 1860)

And what do we learn from the Hid Treasure parable of Matthew 13?

  • That there is a historic, long lasting, and cultural reality of treasures hidden in the fields of Palestine.
  • That the people understood about the strong desire of someone finding such a treasure...the desire to purchase the corresponding field. Otherwise the danger was extreme in trying to remove it.
  • Often the finder of the treasure did so unexpectedly, even while many sought treasures as a way of life. The usual discovery is accidental.
  • That the man who found a treasure in a field, and who purchased that field, could carefully, methodically, and somewhat safely remove the treasure.

Furthermore, from the parable we glean:

  • That the Lord Jesus is the "man" who found the treasure in the field.
  • That the field is the world.
  • That Israel is the treasure.
  • That He purchased the field (the world) to gain the treasure (Israel) in the field.
  • He did this by His shed blood on Calvary's cross.

There is also a Pearl of Great Price that He bought, namely the church, but that is another parable of Matthew 13.  Read your bible for more.
